National Heroes Day in Uganda

Legal status and the date

Uganda’s Public Holidays Act lists June 9 as a public holiday observed throughout the country. Under the Employment Act, covered employees are entitled to a paid holiday; those who work may receive another paid day off or, in specified circumstances, at least double pay. The Act applies to employees with at least six months of continuous service who normally work 16 hours or more per week.[1][2]

Why Uganda marks the day

The Office of the Prime Minister says the date was chosen in memory of Edidian Luttamaguzi and other supporters who were killed after refusing to reveal the location of a National Resistance Army unit during the liberation struggle. The same account says residents of Kikandwa proposed an annual Heroes Day in 1989 and Cabinet approved it that June.[3]

Uganda’s official account connects the commemoration with sacrifice in the struggle and the restoration of peace and security. The Office of the President describes the day as honouring contributions to the liberation struggle and national development.[3][4]

Commemorations

National ceremonies are coordinated by the Office of the President. A government account of a past celebration describes a wreath laid at a monument to fallen freedom fighters and recognition for people who served in the struggle or their communities.[4]

The Office of the President’s Chancery lists Heroes Day among the national functions where presidential medal investitures take place. Check locally for family customs, foods or events.[5]

Work, services and travel

The public-holiday designation creates a paid-holiday entitlement for employees covered by the Employment Act; it does not by itself establish which individual shops, banks, or transport services close. Check opening hours with the business or service before you go.[1][2]
