Easter Sunday in Uganda

Public holiday status

The Public Holidays Act says that the holidays in its schedule are observed throughout Uganda. The schedule names Good Friday and Easter Monday, but does not list Easter Sunday separately. In practical terms, Easter Sunday falls on a Sunday, and the Employment Act says weekly rest should include Sundays wherever practicable.[1][3]

For employees, the Employment Act provides paid weekly rest, with Sundays included wherever practicable. The official calendar lists no substitute day for Easter Sunday. The named Easter public holidays are Good Friday and Easter Monday; employers and services may have their own operating arrangements.[1][3]

Meaning and Ugandan Christian history

For Christians, Easter celebrates Jesus’ resurrection. The Church of Uganda’s statement of faith includes the belief that Jesus “rose again from the dead,” placing the central Easter belief within the church’s teaching.[2]

Christianity first came to Uganda through the arrival of Church Missionary Society missionaries in 1877, according to the Church of Uganda. Its account says the faith was initially preached to people at the court of Kabaka Mutesa of Buganda. This provides historical context for Christian observances in Uganda, without implying that every resident celebrates Easter.[2]

Church observances

Church worship is one documented way Ugandans mark Easter Sunday. Ankole Diocese of the Church of Uganda reported that churches there celebrated the resurrection, with the diocesan bishop welcoming Christians at St James Cathedral Ruharo. This is an example from Ankole, not evidence that every church follows the same programme.[4]

The Church of Uganda is organized into dioceses serving regions across the country, and Ankole Diocese reported Easter worship in local congregations. Service times and other customs can differ between churches; check with a church for its programme.[2][4]

What to expect

Good Friday and Easter Monday are the statutory public holidays named around Easter in the Public Holidays Act. Employees are entitled to paid weekly rest, with Sundays included wherever practicable. Check opening hours with the bank, shop, government office or transport provider before travelling or planning a visit.[1][3]
