Date and legal status

The Public Holidays Act names National Heroes Day as September 16 and provides that when a listed holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is a public holiday. The Act was amended to include National Heroes Day in 1998; a 2019 government address says the holiday was first observed that year.[1][2]

Under the Act, scheduled public holidays are close holidays for banks, shops and stores where goods are sold, and public offices. The law allows limited exceptions, including necessary pharmacy services, public markets and food or drink sales before 9 a.m., petrol stations, and garages handling emergency repairs. The day is tied to the federation’s national honours and remembrance of its heroes. In a 2019 address, the prime minister said the date was set aside for the birthday of Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, who was posthumously named the first National Hero. The address described all five National Heroes as participants in the independence struggle.[2]

The heroes named in that address are Bradshaw, Sir C. A. Paul Southwell, Sir Joseph Nathaniel France, Sir Simeon Daniel and Sir Kennedy Simmonds. The government’s 2022 National Heroes Day message described them as nation builders whose sacrifices and work benefited their communities and country. The message also connected remembrance with teaching young people about the country’s past.[2][3]

How it is observed

Government observances have included a gathering at National Heroes Park, where citizens and residents pay tribute to the national heroes. The 2019 address described the park as a place to honor their shared and individual contributions and to bring people together in remembrance.[2]
