Labour Day in St. Kitts and Nevis
Labour Day is a public holiday in St. Kitts and Nevis, set by law for the first Monday in May. Its local observance is closely associated with the labour movement and an annual Labour Day march.[1][3]
Date, legal status and closures
The Public Holidays Act lists Labour Day as “the first Monday in May.” It also says scheduled public holidays are close holidays in banks, shops and stores where goods are sold, and public offices. The Act allows exceptions for certain services and food sales, and permits the Governor-General to authorize specified classes of shops to open by order.[1]
Labour Day is already fixed to a Monday, so the Act’s rule moving certain holidays to Monday when they fall on Sunday does not set a separate observed day for it. The Act does allow the Governor-General to proclaim a special public holiday or substitute a different day in a particular year.[1]
Labour movement and national meaning
The St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union began in 1932 as the St. Kitts Workers’ League and took its present name in 1940, according to a Ministry of Labour tribute published by the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service. Those dates provide a local point of reference for the organized labour movement associated with the holiday.[2]
In a Labour Day address, Prime Minister Timothy Harris referred to hard-won gains of the labour movement in the Federation and called for solidarity among workers. The government’s recognition of union activity also includes support for dialogue on labour issues and the participation of union representatives in international labour events.[4]
Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw is another important figure in this history: the government describes him as the first Premier and Father of Independence, and says he led the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union for decades. This links Labour Day observances with a wider story of nation-building as well as workers’ concerns.[3]
How the day is observed
A Labour Day march is an established part of the observance in St. Kitts. In 2023, a government report described the march as the historic annual Labour Day March and noted that a ceremony at Bradshaw’s former home took place just before it.[3]
The format can vary. In a 2020 Labour Day message, Prime Minister Harris said workers would normally be out in the streets in large numbers, but the pandemic meant crowds were avoided that year. The same message was dedicated to workers, particularly frontline workers.[2]
