Legal status and dates

Tanzania’s Public Holidays Act says the days in its schedule are to be observed as public holidays every year. It lists Christmas Day on 25 December and Boxing Day on 26 December, so the holiday period includes two consecutive statutory public holidays.[1]

The Act lets the President declare an additional public holiday or substitute another day for a scheduled one. It does not set an automatic Monday substitute when a holiday falls on a weekend.[1]

The Act does not promise every worker a day off: it expressly allows a government department head to open offices and require employees to work on a public holiday. For banks, the Banking and Financial Institutions Act says references in written law to a bank holiday include public holidays. Check with an employer or bank about its specific arrangements.[1][5]

A Christian feast with a Tanzanian history

Christmas is a Christian feast, observed in Tanzania through church services as well as its place in the national holiday calendar. A report from the Tanzanian Vice-President’s Office records the Vice-President joining worshippers for a Christmas Mass at St Peter’s Catholic Parish in Dar es Salaam, illustrating a public example of the day’s religious observance.[2]

Zanzibar’s Anglican Diocese traces one local landmark to Christmas Day in 1873, when construction began on Christ Church in Stone Town. The Diocese says the church was built on the site of a former slave market and that missionaries arrived in Zanzibar in the 1860s to preach and build the cathedral. This history connects Christian institutions in Tanzania with the island’s nineteenth-century past.[4]

Observances differ by community

Church worship is one form of Christmas observance in Tanzania. The Vice-President’s Office report describes a Christmas Mass attended by worshippers in Dar es Salaam.[2]

Research published in the journal Ethnology describes a distinct Christmas connection among Chagga kin groups in northern Tanzania: migrants may return home at Christmas to commemorate ancestors. The study discusses this practice in the context of Chagga rituals and kinship; it should not be taken as a custom shared by all Tanzanians.[3]

What to expect

The Public Holidays Act makes Christmas Day a public holiday, but it also allows public offices to open and public employees to be called to work. The Bank of Tanzania’s published holiday list includes Christmas Day and Boxing Day; the banking law includes public holidays within references to bank holidays.
