Christmas Day in Rwanda

A national public holiday

Rwanda’s 2022 Presidential Order lists Christmas Day on 25 December and Boxing Day on 26 December among the country’s public holidays.[1] The Labour Law applies the public-holiday entitlement to employees: they receive full salary, and an employee who works on a public holiday is entitled to an equivalent rest day within 30 days.[2]

The Order also sets a general weekend rule: when a public holiday falls on a weekend, the following working day becomes a public holiday. If two consecutive public holidays fall on a weekend, they are compensated with one following working day; a further clause addresses cases when that following working day is itself a public holiday.[1] Check official notices for the applicable observed day, since the Order’s rules can affect the practical date off.

Christian roots in Rwanda

Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus in Christian tradition. Rwanda’s Christian history took shape during the colonial era: the Catholic White Fathers established their first mission station in 1900, and German Lutheran missionaries began work in 1908, according to the Dictionary of African Christian Biography.[4] Christianity later developed through several church traditions, so Christmas observance is not limited to one denomination.[4]

Worship, music and shared meals

A scholarly account of Rwandan culture describes Christmas Eve visits by children singing and drumming, and Christmas Day worship services featuring music, dance and carols.[3] It also records families and friends sharing dishes such as beans, peas, potatoes and rice with beef, chicken or goat meat. These are documented examples, not a checklist followed by every household.

The same account describes Christmas and New Year as occasions for sharing food with friends and neighbours.[3] Families and communities share food on these occasions.[3]

What to expect as a visitor

For workers, the holiday has a clear legal effect: the law provides the public-holiday entitlement and full salary, with compensatory rest if an employee works.[2] Travellers should check directly with the business or service they plan to use.
