Legal status and substitute days

Rwanda’s Presidential Order on public holidays lists Good Friday alongside Easter Monday. Its holiday provisions apply to public- and private-sector employees and employers, making the day part of the country’s statutory holiday calendar.[1]

If a public holiday falls on a weekend, the following working day becomes a public holiday, subject to the Order’s rules for consecutive or coinciding holidays. The Order makes an exception for the 7 April Genocide against the Tutsi Memorial Day; it does not exclude Good Friday.[1]

Meaning and place in Easter

Good Friday is the Friday in Holy Week when Christians commemorate the Passion of Jesus. Rwanda’s Catholic bishops describe Easter as the center of the liturgical year and the Easter Triduum as central to the Christian faith; their guidance identifies Good Friday observance as the celebration of the Passion of the Lord.[2][3]

A Rwanda-specific example of Catholic practice comes from the bishops’ guidance during the COVID-19 restrictions. It instructed bishops and parish priests to celebrate the Triduum in cathedral and parish churches, while faithful joined in family prayer and used broadcast media to follow services; on Good Friday, the bishop or parish priest was to celebrate the Passion of the Lord.[2]

That guidance was issued for an exceptional period when gatherings were prohibited. It documents how Rwanda’s Catholic Church adapted Good Friday worship then; it does not establish a routine nationwide schedule or customs for every Christian community. Check with local churches about foods, fasting practices, processions or regional customs.[2]

Work, services and travel

Because Good Friday is a statutory public holiday, employees and employers in public and private sectors are covered by the holiday provisions. The Order does not give opening schedules for banks, shops, schools or transport, so travelers should check directly with the office or service they plan to use.[1]
