Meaning and Namibian context

Good Friday is part of the Christian Easter observance. In Christian teaching, it recalls Jesus’ Passion and crucifixion and is a day for reflection on his death. The wider Easter observance connects that remembrance with the celebration of the Resurrection.[2]

Namibia’s Christian history includes missionary activity during the colonial period. A University of Namibia study documents mission societies working in the eastern Caprivi region, including Seventh-day Adventist and Roman Catholic missions during the 1920s to 1960s. That history provides local context for Christian observance, but it does not establish a single origin or a uniform set of Good Friday customs across the country.[3]

Public holiday law and dates

The Public Holidays Act, 1990 names Good Friday in its schedule of public holidays. The calendar date varies with Easter, so it falls on a Friday whose date changes from year to year.[1][2]

The Act provides a substitute day when a public holiday falls on a Sunday: the following Monday is also a public holiday, unless that Monday is already one. Since Good Friday falls on Friday, this Sunday rule does not create a substitute day for it. The Act also lets the President declare an additional public holiday for a particular year by proclamation.[1]

Work, pay and practical plans

The Labour Act generally bars employers from requiring or permitting work on a public holiday, while allowing exceptions that include urgent work, qualifying shops and hotels, health and social welfare care, farm work required that day, continuous shifts, and approved activities. The Act does not mean every shop must close; it allows qualifying businesses to operate on a public holiday.[4]

For an employee whose ordinary workday falls on the holiday, the Labour Act provides at least the employee’s daily remuneration if they do not work, subject to a condition about absence immediately before or after the holiday. If they work, the standard provision is normal daily remuneration plus basic pay for each hour worked. Special arrangements apply in specified circumstances, including work on a day that is not the employee’s ordinary workday.[4]
