Karume Day in Tanzania

A day of remembrance

Karume Day is specific to Tanzania because it honours a leader associated with both Zanzibar and the creation of the United Republic. The Founders of the Nation (Honouring Procedures) Act applies to Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, names Karume Day, and sets it on 7 April. It directs that the day be marked under the Public Holidays Act.[1]

The holiday commemorates Karume’s death on 7 April 1972. A Tanzanian president’s 2018 remembrance speech described Karume as Zanzibar’s first president and Tanzania’s first vice-president, and credited him and Julius Nyerere with founding the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. The speech said the holiday gives Tanzanians an opportunity to remember his life and reflect on how to honour it.[3]

Legal status and time off

Karume Day is recognized as a public holiday nationally. The Founders of the Nation Act directs that it be marked under the Public Holidays Act, although Karume Day is not listed in that Act’s schedule. The Act allows the President to declare an additional day or a substitute by proclamation and allows a government department head to open offices and require staff to work on a public holiday.[1][2]

The Act does not set out an automatic replacement day when Karume Day falls on a weekend. No substitute day is listed in the calendar facts for this holiday. Whether a particular office or service operates can depend on its arrangements, so residents and visitors should check directly before making plans.[2]

How it is commemorated

Commemorations include official remembrance events. In Zanzibar, an official report described a gathering at the CCM headquarters in Kisiwandui, where national leaders, family members, members of the public and religious leaders took part in a special prayer. The gathering was followed by a visit to Karume’s grave and the laying of wreaths.[4]

Remembrance also takes place on the mainland. In his 2018 speech in Arusha, Tanzania’s president marked Karume Day with a public event and called on Tanzanians to reflect on Karume’s contribution and honour his life. These examples show observances in both parts of the Union.[3]

Closures and practical plans

Public-holiday status does not mean every workplace must close: the law permits government departments to open and require staff to work. Check opening hours and transport schedules with the specific provider, especially if you plan to attend a memorial event.[2]
