Independence Day in Poland
Poland’s National Independence Day is observed every year on 11 November. It commemorates the restoration of Polish statehood in 1918, after the country had been partitioned among neighboring powers, and is a statutory day off work.[1][2]
A national day off
Poland’s law on days off work names 11 November as National Independence Day. It is a public holiday across the country, although some work can still take place where the law permits it.[1]
There is no single substitute day for everyone when the holiday falls on a weekend. For an employee whose Saturday is the regular rest day in a five-day workweek, a Saturday holiday generally reduces working hours and requires another day off within the same settlement period; the details depend on that person’s schedule. A Sunday holiday does not create the same general reduction in working hours.[3]
Why Poland marks 11 November
The date recalls Poland’s return as an independent state after 123 years of partitions. On 11 November 1918, Józef Piłsudski took command of the Polish armed forces from the Regency Council. The date is symbolic of a broader process of restoring Polish statehood, rather than a claim that every part of that process happened on one day.[2]
The holiday became an official national observance under a 1937 law. It was abolished after the Second World War, when communist authorities promoted 22 July as a national holiday. In February 1989, 11 November returned to the state holiday calendar under the name National Independence Day.[2]
Ceremonies and regional customs
Central state ceremonies have been held at Piłsudski Square in Warsaw, including a remembrance ceremony and a formal changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The programme has also included wreath-laying and a military parade; arrangements can vary from year to year.[4]
In Poznań and the surrounding Wielkopolska region, 11 November is also associated with St Martin’s croissant, or rogal świętomarciński. The crescent-shaped pastry has a white poppy-seed filling and is part of the local observance of St Martin’s Day. The protected product is made in Poznań and eligible areas of Wielkopolska.[5]
What to expect on the day
The holiday’s status affects shopping: the law restricts trade and trade-related work in retail establishments on public holidays, including 11 November. The law provides specified exceptions, so some shops may still open; check locally if you need a particular store or service.[1][6]
Ceremonies and public events can affect movement around their locations. The national ceremony has taken place in central Warsaw, but specific road closures and transport changes depend on local arrangements. Check local authority and transport-operator notices before travelling, and confirm opening hours with offices, banks, museums, or other venues you plan to visit.[4]
