In Christian tradition, Pentecost recalls the Holy Spirit coming upon Jesus’s disciples. Whit Monday follows the feast on Sunday, and its date moves with Easter.[4]

Legal status in French Guiana

The Labour Code lists Whit Monday among France’s legal public holidays, including for French Guiana. It is separate from French Guiana’s locally dated commemoration of the abolition of slavery, which falls on June 10.[1][2]

A legal public holiday does not automatically mean every private-sector employee has the day off. Whether the day is not worked depends on a collective agreement or, if there is none, the employer. An agreement may also designate Whit Monday for the annual solidarity day; the arrangement can instead use another day or form of work.[2]

If Whit Monday is an employee’s usual non-working day, general rules do not provide an extra day off solely because the holiday falls then. More favorable workplace agreements may apply. There is no general substitute weekday specified for this situation.[2]
