Whit Monday in Mayotte

Meaning and timing

Whit Monday is the Monday after Pentecost. For Christians, Pentecost recalls the Holy Spirit descending on Jesus’ disciples; it is observed on the fiftieth day after Easter.[4]

Because the date follows Easter, it moves from year to year. French labour law names Whit Monday among the legal public holidays, while the holiday itself does not establish a special Mayotte-specific religious observance.[1]

Mayotte’s legal status

The French Labour Code lists Whit Monday as a public holiday. Its Mayotte provisions say that the statutory holiday lists also apply there, while allowing collective agreements or workplace practice to provide additional holidays. They mention Miradji, Idi-el-Fitri, Idi-el-Kabir and Maoulid as examples of such additional days.[1][2]

A public holiday is not automatically a paid day off for every private-sector employee. Outside 1 May, whether a holiday is worked or not depends on the applicable agreement or workplace arrangements. Employers can also arrange the solidarity day on a previously non-working holiday such as Whit Monday, or use another permitted arrangement.[3]
