Meaning and date

In Christian tradition, Pentecost commemorates the Holy Spirit coming upon the Apostles and other disciples. The feast is celebrated 50 days after Easter Sunday, and Whit Monday is the following day.[3]

Public holiday and the solidarity day

The French Labour Code lists Whit Monday among the legal public holidays. It also separately names 20 December as the public holiday commemorating the abolition of slavery in Réunion, so the two dates have distinct legal meanings.[1][2]

Being a public holiday does not automatically mean everyone has a paid day off. The rules for most public holidays, other than 1 May, allow them to be worked; the Labour Code specifies that the solidarity day is an additional day of work whose purpose is to fund support for the autonomy of older people and people with disabilities.[1][4]

In the private sector, an enterprise or branch agreement sets how the solidarity day is completed. It may involve working on a previously non-working public holiday, such as Whit Monday, using a rest day, or another arrangement that adds previously unworked hours. Public service employees also complete a solidarity day, but it can be scheduled through different arrangements. Therefore, the day off and pay arrangements depend on the applicable workplace rules; Whit Monday is not automatically the solidarity day for every worker.[4][5]

Réunion has an additional public holiday on 20 December commemorating the abolition of slavery.[2]

Expect opening arrangements to depend on the workplace and service. Some employees may work Whit Monday as part of their solidarity-day arrangements, while others may have the day off; the legal status alone does not establish whether a particular shop, bank, office, school, or transport service will operate. Check the relevant provider’s holiday schedule before travelling or planning an appointment.[1][4][5]
