Whit Monday in Guadeloupe

A moveable Christian holiday

Whit Monday is the Monday after Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost commemorates the Holy Spirit coming upon Jesus’ disciples, and its date changes with Easter; Guadeloupe’s holiday therefore falls on a different Monday from year to year.[4][5]

In Guadeloupe, the name used in French is Lundi de Pentecôte. The Labor Code includes it among France’s legal public holidays, and the official Service Public calendar lists it among the public holidays for overseas departments.[1][3]

Legal status and time off

Whit Monday is not a holiday created specifically for Guadeloupe. The Labor Code lists it as a legal holiday nationally. Guadeloupe also has a separate local public holiday on 27 May, commemorating the abolition of slavery; that date is set apart in the Code from Whit Monday.[1][2][3]

Being a legal holiday does not automatically mean that everyone is off work. For most employees, whether a public holiday is non-working depends on the applicable collective agreement or workplace agreement, or on the employer where no agreement applies. The official guidance also says that when a non-working holiday falls on an employee’s usual rest day, it does not generally create an extra day off. There is no general substitute Monday for Whit Monday; specific workplace agreements may provide different arrangements.[1][3]

The day can also be used for the solidarity workday. Employers and workplace or branch agreements can set how that day is worked, and the Monday of Pentecost is one permitted option. It is not automatically the solidarity workday for every worker or workplace.[6]

Observances in Guadeloupe

Pentecost has religious meaning for Christian communities, and Guadeloupe’s Catholic Diocese documents a pilgrimage at Duval in Petit-Canal on Whit Monday. Its account describes prayer, praise, teaching, Mass and confession, with participants gathering to honor Mary as Mother of the Church. This is a documented local observance, not evidence that every resident celebrates in the same way.[4][7]

An educational resource hosted by the Guadeloupe Academy of Education lists music, dance and drum songs at beaches or rivers on Pentecost Sunday and Monday. It records these as part of an annual cultural calendar, but does not establish that such gatherings take place everywhere or every year.[5]

Planning around the holiday

Because the day is a legal holiday, opening arrangements can differ from an ordinary Monday, but businesses are not all required to close. Check opening hours with government offices and banks before you go; shops, banks and transport services follow their own schedules, so check opening hours and transport timetables with each provider before you go.[1][3]

If you need to visit an office, make a purchase or travel by bus, check the specific organization or operator before setting out. Workers should consult their workplace agreement or employer to confirm whether Whit Monday is a non-working day or has been designated for solidarity work.[1][6]
