Legal status in Guadeloupe

French labour law lists Ascension among the country’s legal public holidays, and the official guidance on holidays in the overseas departments includes it for Guadeloupe. Guadeloupe also has an additional local public holiday for the commemoration of the abolition of slavery, observed on 27 May; that is a separate date and observance.[1][2]

Ascension is not automatically a non-working day for every employee. In the private sector, the day is non-working when a collective agreement or workplace agreement provides for it, or when the employer decides so. If it is not worked, the law protects pay for employees with at least three months’ seniority, subject to the stated exceptions.[1][2]

If a public holiday falls on a day an employee would not normally work, the official guidance says there is no automatic additional day off. Hours lost because a public holiday is not worked do not have to be made up.[1][2]

What Ascension Day commemorates

In Christian belief, Ascension Day commemorates Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven. The Catholic Church’s catechism describes this as taking place after forty days in which Jesus appeared to the apostles following his resurrection.[3]

The date moves with Easter, while the public holiday’s legal status comes from French labour law.[1]

Public services and planning

A Guadeloupe prefecture notice provides a local example of the holiday’s practical effect: the prefecture and the Pointe-à-Pitre sub-prefecture announced that their offices would close for Ascension Day in 2023 and reopen the following day. This confirms a closure for those offices on that occasion, not a guarantee about every public counter or service each year.[4]
