Ascension Day in Caribbean Netherlands

Meaning and date

In Christian tradition, Ascension Day marks the belief that Jesus ascended to heaven. It is observed on the fortieth day after Easter Sunday, so it falls on a Thursday; its date changes with Easter.[3]

The holiday’s specific place in the Caribbean Netherlands is legal and practical: the Employment Act 2000 BES names Ascension Day as a public holiday for the purposes of the Act. The National Office for the Caribbean Netherlands also includes it in its official holiday list, alongside island-specific days such as Dia di Rincon on Bonaire, Statia Day and Saba Day.[1][2]

A shared holiday across the islands

Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba are the three public bodies collectively known as the Caribbean Netherlands. The regional holiday list includes Ascension Day without limiting it to one island, and Saba’s public holiday calendar lists it as well.[1][4]

The official listings confirm its calendar status, but do not describe a distinct local origin, ceremony, public event or customary meal for the holiday. They also do not establish that residents generally attend church or spend the day in a particular way. Those details should not be assumed to be the same across Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba.[1][4]

Work and holiday pay

A public holiday does not automatically mean every employee has the day off. The National Office says the employer decides whether work takes place. If a holiday falls on an employee’s normal working day, the employee retains the wages they would normally have earned, even if the business closes; an employee who works as scheduled on a public holiday is entitled to at least double those wages under the Act.[1][2]

The Act gives an island’s Executive Council authority to move the post-Carnival holiday and certain island-specific holidays. Ascension Day is not among the holidays listed in that provision, so it does not set out an Ascension-specific replacement day. The official holiday list likewise gives Ascension Day as a single holiday, without a substitute date.[2]
