Meaning and timing

In Christian tradition, Pentecost commemorates the gift of the Holy Spirit to the apostles. Whit Monday is the Monday after Pentecost Sunday, which the Catholic Church in France describes as the seventh Sunday after Easter. Its date therefore changes from year to year.[4]

Martinique’s holiday calendar

The French Labour Code lists Pentecost Monday among the legal public holidays. A separate provision gives Martinique a public holiday on 22 May for the commemoration of the abolition of slavery. Martinique’s tourism history page records that slavery was officially abolished on the island on 22 May 1848. These are two distinct holidays, even when they occur close together.[1][2][5]

The 22 May commemoration gives the island’s public holiday calendar a local historical observance alongside national holidays. It does not change the meaning or timing of Whit Monday, which remains tied to Pentecost.[1][2][4]

Work and practical planning

A public holiday is not automatically a non-working day for every private-sector employee. Service Public says that, apart from 1 May, a holiday is not necessarily compulsory time off: whether it is worked depends on the applicable collective or company agreement, or on the employer where no agreement applies. Check your workplace arrangements if you need to know whether you are expected to work.[3]

Whit Monday may also be chosen for the annual solidarity day, but it is only one permitted arrangement. The solidarity day can instead be organized through another previously unworked day or another schedule, under the terms set by agreement or, where none exists, by the employer after consulting the employee representative body.[3]
