A national day with a Martinique context

The French Labour Code lists July 14 among the legal public holidays. The same code separately names May 22 as Martinique’s public holiday commemorating the abolition of slavery.[1][2] The dates mark different histories: July 14 is the French National Day, while May 22 recalls the 1848 abolition of slavery in Martinique.[3][4]

That distinction matters when describing the holiday’s local meaning. The national day is part of France’s civic calendar; it should not be presented as a Martinique-specific commemoration of emancipation. Martinique’s own calendar gives that remembrance a separate date.[1][2]

The history behind July 14

The date recalls the taking of the Bastille in Paris on July 14, 1789, during the French Revolution. The Élysée explains that the Bastille had once served as a prison, and that its symbolic importance grew in how later generations remembered the event.[5]

The day’s meaning also draws on the anniversary celebration held in 1790, the Fête de la Fédération, which was intended to celebrate national unity. France established July 14 as its National Day in 1880; the Élysée describes the choice as drawing on both the revolutionary event and the unifying symbolism of the 1790 celebration.[5]

A day off, but not for every worker

July 14 is a legal public holiday in Martinique, but that status does not automatically mean every private-sector employee has the day off. Service Public says that, apart from May 1, legal holidays are non-working days when a collective agreement, company agreement or employer provides for it. If July 14 falls on a day the employee does not usually work, there is no automatic extra day off; an agreement may provide otherwise.[1][6]
