Who is St. John?

The Vatican’s saint calendar identifies December 27 with St. John, Apostle and Evangelist. It describes him as the beloved disciple and says Christian tradition holds him to be the author of the Gospel of John, the Johannine letters and the Book of Revelation.[1]

This is a Christian feast day observed beyond Vatican City. The Vatican’s calendar of saints explains the date and the saint’s place in Church tradition; it does not, by itself, establish a special Vatican City origin or local custom for the holiday.[1]

Holiday status and time off

The Vatican City calendar lists St. John as a public holiday every December 27 and shows no substitute or observed day. Separately, the published regulation for the Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi names December 27 among its holidays. That regulation concerns the organization’s staff, so it should not be read as proof that all residents, workers or businesses across Vatican City follow the same arrangement.[2]

Under that regulation, the organization identifies in advance which listed holidays that do not fall on Sunday may require its offices to open for service needs; staff receive authorized compensatory hours for those days. The text does not describe a substitute day when December 27 falls on Sunday. It does not set out closure rules for Vatican City banks, shops or transport.[2]

The Lateran is a different connection

St. John’s name can be confused with the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, but the basilica is not the source of a documented Vatican City holiday custom for December 27. The Holy See describes the Lateran as the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome and explains that its dedication is celebrated on November 9; the names of John the Baptist and John the Evangelist were added to the basilica’s name after the sixth century.[3]

Visiting Vatican City

The Vatican Museums publish their own opening and closure schedule. Their regular information lists December 25 and 26 among the closures, but not December 27; it also lists Sundays as closed except for the last Sunday of the month, subject to stated exceptions. Check the current museum schedule before travelling, since Sunday opening and exceptional closures can affect a visit.[4]

Check with local businesses and transport services about food customs, public ceremonies and holiday schedules. Visitors should check the relevant service’s own notices rather than assume that a religious feast determines every opening time.[2][4]
