Date and holiday status

New Year’s Eve falls on December 31. An employment regulation for the Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi also names December 31 among its holidays. That regulation allows the employer to keep offices open when service needs require it, with time off granted later; it does not establish a blanket rule for every workplace in Vatican City.[4]

A year-end liturgy

The observance is distinctive in Vatican City because the year-end service takes place at St Peter’s Basilica, within the state. Official Holy See accounts document the Pope presiding at First Vespers for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, followed by the traditional Te Deum. The service connects the end of the civil year with the Christmas season and the liturgical celebration of Mary.[1][2]

The Church’s Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy explains the year-end practice as a time to reflect on the passing of time, regret failings and give thanks for blessings. It describes the Te Deum as communal praise and thanksgiving; some religious communities also hold prayer vigils on December 31. These are Catholic practices, not evidence that every resident or visitor observes the day in the same way.[3]

What visitors can expect

St Peter’s Square may also be part of the year-end visit: official accounts record the Pope visiting the Nativity scene there after the liturgy. That confirms the presence of the display during those documented celebrations, but does not establish a fixed public event or a guaranteed viewing schedule every year.[1][2]

The Vatican Museums’ published schedule gives regular Monday-to-Saturday hours and lists annual closure dates, but December 31 is not among them. The page notes an exception to its last-Sunday opening when December 31 falls on that Sunday. Check the Museums’ current schedule before planning a visit, especially when the date falls on a Sunday. Check opening hours with offices, shops and banks, and transport times with the relevant service, before you go.[5]
