Statehood Day in Ukraine
Ukraine marks Statehood Day on July 15, a public holiday that connects the country’s present sovereignty with a longer history of Ukrainian statehood. The date also coincides with the Orthodox commemoration of the baptism of Kyivan Rus and Prince Volodymyr the Great.[1][2]
A holiday about Ukrainian statehood
The holiday was established by presidential decree in 2021. The decree presents Ukrainian statehood as a continuous history rooted in Kyiv and the rule of Prince Volodymyr, and names later political traditions including the Galician-Volhynian principality, the Cossack state, the Ukrainian People’s Republic, and modern Ukraine.[1]
The decree connects Volodymyr’s adoption of Christianity in 988 with the history of Kyivan Rus. Statehood Day therefore commemorates more than one event: its official purpose is to recognize the history of Ukrainian state formation and people who worked and fought for statehood and independence.[1]
Why the date is July 15
When created, the holiday was observed on July 28, alongside the Day of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus–Ukraine. A 2023 presidential amendment changed Statehood Day to July 15; the official holiday record lists July 15 as its current date.[1][2]
The date change coincided with a church-calendar change, but it was not made in 2024. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine approved use of the New Julian calendar from September 1, 2023, while allowing congregations that chose to do so to continue using the Julian calendar.[6]
How it is marked
Statehood Day is also the Day of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus–Ukraine. In a presidential address for the holiday, the President described Ukraine’s historical roots in Kyivan Rus and the Cossack state, and referred to the blue-and-yellow flag and the trident as national symbols.[5]
Official observances have included ceremonial events, presidential addresses, state awards, and the presentation of passports to young Ukrainians. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine has also held liturgies for the day.[5]
Work, closures, and travel
The Labor Code lists July 15 as a public holiday. Under its ordinary rule, when a public holiday falls on a weekly rest day, that rest day transfers to the following day. A Saturday or Sunday observance therefore transfers to Monday.[2][3]
That automatic holiday rest-day rule is suspended while martial law applies: the Labor Code’s holiday and weekend provisions do not operate during that period. So a public holiday does not by itself guarantee a day off for workers, or a Monday substitute. Office, bank, shop, and transport schedules can depend on the employer or local operator; check the specific service before traveling.[3][4]
