A holiday rooted in Lithuania’s statehood

The date of Mindaugas’s coronation is treated as a likely date rather than a certainty: the Lithuanian Parliament’s historical account says historian Edvardas Gudavičius identified July 6, 1253, as the probable date. It describes the coronation as a step that brought the young Lithuanian state into the political system of medieval Latin Europe.[1]

July 6 was entered into Lithuania’s list of holidays in 1990, and it was officially observed as Statehood Day for the first time in 1991. The holiday’s formal name later came to include National Anthem Day, reflecting the tradition of singing “Tautiška giesmė” together.[1]

A public holiday under Lithuanian law

Lithuania’s Labour Code names July 6 as Statehood (Coronation of King Mindaugas) and National Anthem Day. Work is normally not done on public holidays; the State Labour Inspectorate says holiday work is allowed in certain cases, including with an employee’s consent, subject to exceptions for specific working-time arrangements or collective agreements.[1][2]

A shared song and local observances

The worldwide anthem tradition began in 2009 during the millennium commemoration of Lithuania’s name. It developed into an annual gathering at 9 p.m. Lithuania time, with Lithuanians singing the national anthem together across the world.[1]

Observances also take place at local historic sites. The protected-areas directorate in Lithuania Minor describes a long-running July 6 anthem gathering at Pagramantis hillfort, where the local community joins the regional park and cultural center in organizing it.[3]
