The holiday was first observed on October 14, a date associated with the Feast of the Intercession of the Theotokos. Ukraine’s Cossacks honored the Intercession, which became known as the Cossack Intercession and connected the religious feast with military honor and protection of the homeland.[1]
In 2023, the holiday moved from October 14 to October 1, following the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church’s adoption of the New Julian calendar. The move kept the holiday aligned with the Intercession as observed under that calendar. October 14 remains part of the holiday’s history, including its symbolic association with the founding of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army in 1942.[1]
