A nationwide public holiday

Malaysia’s government lists Hari Kebangsaan on 31 August as a federal public holiday that applies nationwide. The same government guide lists Malaysia Day on 16 September as a separate federal public holiday.[1]

Under the Employment Act 1955, National Day is one of five specified paid holidays for employees covered by the Act. If a public holiday covered by the Act falls on an employee’s rest day or another public holiday, the next working day is a paid substitute holiday. The Act also allows some other public holidays to be substituted by agreement.[4]

The 1957 proclamation

The Federation of Malaya’s independence was proclaimed at Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on 31 August 1957. Tunku Abdul Rahman read the proclamation, then called “Merdeka” seven times; the crowd answered. The ceremony continued with the raising of the federation’s flag to the national anthem.[2]

The proclamation marked the end of British rule over the Federation of Malaya and declared it an independent, sovereign country. Malaysia’s National Day therefore remembers the independence of Malaya, the predecessor to the wider federation formed later.[2][3]

How it differs from Malaysia Day

Malaysia Day marks a different milestone. The Federation of Malaysia was proclaimed on 16 September 1963, bringing together the Federation of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. Singapore left the federation in 1965.[3]

Planning around the holiday

The nationwide public holiday designation does not establish the opening hours of every office, bank, shop or attraction. Check with the specific organization or venue before travelling, and consult local transport or traffic notices if you plan to visit a major event.[1]
