For workers in private companies, the Ministry of Manpower says employees are not required to work on a national holiday. Some continuous-operation work may continue, and employers may arrange work in certain circumstances by agreement; employees required to work are entitled to overtime pay.[3]
The proclamation and its meaning
On 17 August 1945, Indonesia proclaimed itself an independent and sovereign state. The anniversary recalls the declaration and the subsequent struggle to secure recognition of Indonesian sovereignty, including resistance from the Netherlands.[4]
Ceremonies and community events
The national commemoration has included a flag-raising ceremony at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, followed by a flag-lowering ceremony later in the day. A 2023 ceremony also featured a procession carrying the Red and White flag and the Proclamation text, a moment of silence, and a prayer.[5]
Celebrations can also include public games, cultural performances, neighborhood decorations, and the national red-and-white flag. A 2025 government programme documented community games such as climbing a greased pole (panjat pinang) and eating crackers, along with cultural performances representing different regions. The public-holiday status means many employees have the day off, subject to the work exceptions above. It does not establish that every shop, restaurant, bank, school, or transport service closes.
