Public holiday and day off

The Public Holidays Law names Christmas Day as a public general holiday and requires courts and public offices to close for the day. The Labour Act sets out employee entitlements: eligible employees who do not work receive their basic wage for the holiday, subject to having worked their scheduled day immediately before and after it. Employees who work are generally entitled to double pay; by mutual agreement, time off in lieu may be arranged.[2][3]

Christmas Day itself remains on 25 December when it falls on a weekend; the law’s weekend provision applies to the separate holiday on the day after Christmas. This distinction matters when checking which dates are public holidays around Christmas.[2]

The Cayman Islands Government identifies Christmas as a Christian holiday celebrating Jesus’s birth. It says families gather for worship and festive meals, while community outreach reflects the season’s spirit of giving. The government calendar lists the observance across all islands.[1]

The government’s cultural heritage page describes heavy cake, made from local provisions such as cassava, yam, sweet potato or breadfruit, as a customary choice for special occasions including Christmas. The official tourism site also describes heavy cake as a Caymanian staple, commonly made with cassava, coconut milk, sugar and spices.[4][5]

Seasonal sights on Cayman Brac

Christmas lights and community displays are part of the season on Cayman Brac. Radio Cayman, an entity of the Cayman Islands Government, reported that Roy’s Christmas Village grew from a family display started in the mid-1990s into a seasonal attraction where residents and visitors gather, stroll among the lights and take photographs.[6]

Closures and practical planning

Retail activity is restricted by law on Christmas Day. The Sunday Trading Act defines Christmas Day as a prohibited day and generally bars businesses from opening or selling goods. Exceptions include restaurants, tourist-focused businesses, pharmacies and smaller food shops, among others, so these venues may operate; the law does not guarantee that a particular business will open.[7]

Courts and public offices close under the Public Holidays Law, but the law allows approved special arrangements for post offices. Check directly with individual businesses and service providers for holiday hours. Check bank opening hours and public transport with the relevant providers.[2]
