Christmas Day in Jamaica

Legal status and date

The Holidays (Public General) Act lists Christmas Day among Jamaica’s public general holidays. The Act’s schedule also names the day after Christmas as a holiday; when Christmas Day falls on Sunday, it specifies December 26 and 27. A Jamaica Information Service notice describes those two dates as the Monday and Tuesday observed when Christmas falls on Sunday.[1][3]

The holiday designation does not mean every service or business follows the same opening pattern. For example, Jamaica’s Ministry of Labour and Social Security says its offices are closed on public holidays. The Bank of Jamaica also includes Christmas Day in its public-holiday calendar; check with individual offices and banks for their arrangements.[4][5]

Meaning and observance

For Christians, Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. Jamaica Information Service describes local Christmas observances as including church services, gatherings with family and friends, gift sharing and community celebrations.[2]

Christmas is also a season of public activity beyond Christmas Day itself. Grand Market, or “Gran’ Market,” is held in major towns on Christmas Eve. Shoppers buy last-minute goods, while vendors and music enliven shopping areas; the event can continue into Christmas Day.[6]

Food and seasonal customs

Jamaican Christmas meals and treats commonly include ham, Christmas pudding or cake, sorrel, rum punch and eggnog, according to Jamaica Information Service. The same account describes houses decorated with Christmas lights and freshly painted or tended surroundings as part of the season’s preparations.[2]

Sorrel is described by Jamaica Information Service as a traditional Christmas drink in Jamaica. It is prepared in different ways, with ginger and spices among the ingredients in the agency’s recipe; rum or wine may be added if desired.[7]

Planning around the holiday

The public-holiday designation and the Bank of Jamaica calendar are useful signals for planning visits to government offices and banking services. Check opening hours and service arrangements directly with shops, restaurants, hotels or transport operators before travelling.[4][5]
