Meaning and observance

Good Friday recalls the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. In the Cayman Islands, the government describes it as a solemn public holiday and notes that families attend church services and spend quiet time with loved ones.[1]

Public holiday and employment

The Public Holidays Law lists Good Friday as a Public General Holiday. It requires courts and public offices to close for the whole holiday; it allows the Postmaster-General, with the Governor’s approval, to arrange limited post office opening if needed. The law names Good Friday directly and does not specify a replacement day for it.[2]

Under the Labour Act, an employee who does not work on a public holiday is generally entitled to the basic wage they would normally have earned, provided they worked their scheduled workday immediately before and after it. Employees who work on the holiday are generally entitled to double their normal rate for hours worked, subject to the Act’s exceptions and provisions for agreed time off in lieu.[3]

What to expect

The government’s holiday listing describes most establishments as remaining closed until the following day, but it does not provide opening hours for particular shops, banks, restaurants or transport services. Check directly with a business or service provider before relying on it being open.[1]

Good Friday is observed by Christians in the Cayman Islands as a religious day, with church attendance.[1]
