The Comorian decree on public holidays lists July 6 as Independence Day and classifies it as a civil holiday. It declares the listed holidays non-working and paid throughout the country, except for establishments and categories of workers whose activities cannot be interrupted. The decree also lists July 7 as the day after Independence Day, separately from July 6.[1]

The meaning of July 6

July 6 marks the 1975 proclamation of Comorian independence and the country’s accession to international sovereignty. In a national address, the president described the date as a symbol of regained freedom and an occasion to honor those who worked for independence.[2]

The holiday also carries a focus on national unity and territorial integrity. A presidential address identified these themes as part of the meaning of July 6 for Comoros, alongside the responsibilities that come with independence.[2]

Official observances

Official observances have included public ceremonies honoring the armed forces and young people at Place de l’Indépendance in Moroni, followed by a reception at the presidential palace. Programmes may differ from year to year.[2]

A separate presidential address said military ceremonies were planned for July 6.[2]

What residents and visitors can expect

Because the decree makes July 6 a paid, non-working day nationwide, government services and many workplaces are closed. It allows exceptions for work that cannot stop, so some services may continue. Check directly with the relevant provider for opening hours or transport schedules.[1]

The decree lists July 7 as a separate public holiday, not as an observed or substitute date for July 6. It also says an intervening working day may be declared a paid day off under certain circumstances, but it does not establish an automatic substitute-day rule.[1]
