End of Ramadan (Eid al-Fitr) in Comoros

A public holiday across the country

Comoros’ 2025 decree classifies the three days following the 29th of Ramadan as religious holidays that are non-working and paid throughout the national territory. It allows exceptions for establishments and workers whose activities cannot stop; the relevant ministries are to set out which categories may work.[1]

The decree does not promise an automatic replacement day when a holiday falls on a weekend. It says an intervening working day in certain holiday arrangements may be declared non-working and paid.[1]

When Eid begins

Eid al-Fitr falls at the close of Ramadan, on the first day of Shawwal. The Gregorian date shifts from year to year. In a presidential Eid address, the president said the Grand Mufti had confirmed the crescent moon marking the end of Ramadan, illustrating the role of the lunar calendar in identifying the occasion.[2]

The holiday’s meaning in Comoros

Official presidential messages describe Eid as the celebration that concludes the sacred month of Ramadan. They convey greetings to Muslims and Comorians and refer to prayers for the country, its towns and villages, and people facing illness, bereavement, poverty or loneliness.[2]

Work and planning

The decree establishes non-working, paid status nationally, with exceptions for work that cannot be interrupted. It does not identify individual banks, shops, schools or transport services, so their opening times and schedules should be checked locally. Travelers should also check with their providers before making plans around the holiday.[1]
