A shared independence and union

The date recalls two connected milestones. British Somaliland became independent on June 26, 1960; on July 1, the former United Nations Trust Territory of Southern Somalia gained independence from Italy, and the two territories united as the Somali Republic.[2]

Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes July 1 as both Independence Day and Unification Day. The observance therefore commemorates the end of colonial rule in the south and the creation of a united republic, rather than a single independence event detached from the union.[1]

The United Nations Development Programme’s historical account identifies Aden Abdulle Osman as provisional president of the new republic. This marks the beginning of the independent state’s national government, alongside the union celebrated on the holiday.[2]
