A step toward the Somali Republic

On June 26, 1960, the northern Somali regions ended British colonial rule. Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes this as a move toward unification with the south, which gained independence from Italian rule on July 1. The two dates mark related but distinct events in the country’s path to independence.[2]

The southern regions and the northern regions united on July 1, 1960, and established the Somali Republic. Somalia’s federal sources describe July 1 as the country’s Independence and Unification Day, while June 26 recalls the northern regions’ earlier independence. The dates are therefore connected, but June 26 is not the anniversary of the republic’s formation.[1][2]

How it is commemorated

Federal commemorations have connected the date with the raising of the Somali flag and the wider independence movement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the Somali flag was first raised in Hargeisa on June 26, 1960, describing it as a moment in Somalia’s journey to independence.[4]

This is a documented example of an official event; it does not establish that the same programme takes place every year or in every region.[5]

Practical planning

Because June 26 is listed as a national public holiday, check opening hours directly with government offices, banks, schools, shops, and transport providers before making plans. Somalia’s embassy in the United States says it closes on public holidays, but that notice applies to the embassy rather than services inside Somalia.[1][3]
