Ghana’s Public Holidays Act lists New Year’s Day on January 1 as a public holiday throughout the republic. The date also appears in Ghana’s Public Holidays Act of 1960, showing that it has a long statutory history in the country.[1][3]

New Year customs are not identical across Ghana. Public transport is included among the essential services named in the Act, so the law allows it to operate on a public holiday. The Act does not guarantee that every shop, office or service will follow the same hours; check locally before travelling or making plans.[1]

When January 1 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the observed day is the following Monday. The Act also authorizes the President to declare additional or substituted public holidays by executive instrument.[1]
