The independence movement

The holiday marks the proclamation of the Dominican Republic on February 27, 1844. The Archivo General de la Nación describes La Trinitaria as a secret society founded by Juan Pablo Duarte to achieve separation from Haitian rule. Ramón Matías Mella was among its founding members; Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, and Mella are honored as national founding figures.[2][4]

How the day is observed

Official commemorations have included a church service at the Catedral Primada de América, a floral tribute at the Altar de la Patria, and a military and police parade along Santo Domingo’s Malecón. These ceremonies honor the independence leaders and the national struggle for sovereignty.[3]

A nonworking holiday

The Ministry of Labor classifies February 27 as inamovible, and its holiday guidance says the date is not shifted under the regular transfer rule for holidays that fall on certain weekdays. The ministry has also stated that the nonworking-day provision applies in all establishments.
