Independence Day in Honduras

A paid national holiday

Article 339 of Honduras’s Labour Code lists September 15 as a paid national holiday, including when it falls on a Sunday. If an employee works on a holiday by agreement, Article 340 provides for double pay for the hours worked, along with the weekly rest entitlement.[1]

The Code names the date but does not set out a substitute weekday for it.[1]

A regional act and Honduras’s later sovereignty

The date recalls the Act of Independence of Central America, drafted by Honduran José Cecilio del Valle and signed on September 15, 1821. It set out the separation of the Central American provinces from Spanish rule; it was a regional act, rather than a declaration made by Honduras alone.[2][4]

The 1821 act did not immediately make Honduras a fully separate sovereign state. Honduras became part of the Federal Republic of Central America, then declared itself a sovereign, independent state in October 1838 as the federation broke apart.[2]

Ceremonies and school parades

Official Honduran accounts describe September 15 ceremonies that include raising flags and reading the Act of Independence, followed by parades involving public and private schools. In the capital, students, marching bands and other school groups have taken part in large public processions; education officials have also reported celebrations in cities and rural communities around the country.[3][4]

The civic programme can extend beyond the day itself. A Honduran education ministry calendar, for example, records flag activities, a regional peace and liberty torch, and school parades in the days leading up to September 15.[4]

What to expect if you are visiting

Because the holiday is officially recognized and schools and public bodies take part in ceremonies, expect the day’s public schedule to differ from an ordinary working day. Check opening hours with banks, shops and transport providers before you go, and allow extra time where a parade is taking place.[1][3][4]
