A holiday for a founding father

Juan Pablo Duarte was born in Santo Domingo on January 26, 1813. The Dominican Republic’s Permanent Commission on Patriotic Anniversaries identifies him as a Father of the Nation and records that he founded the secret society La Trinitaria in 1838.[3]

La Trinitaria became the seed of a movement for separation from Haiti and the founding of the Dominican Republic. After Duarte left the country in 1843, other independence supporters continued the struggle; the commission says his followers declared independence on February 27, 1844.[3]

How the holiday date works

Law No. 139-97 sets a general rule for public holidays that fall on Tuesday or Wednesday: the nonworking day moves to the previous Monday. If a holiday falls on Thursday or Friday, it moves to the following Monday. The Ministry of Labor says the law applies in establishments across the country.[1]
