The date and its legal status

September 21 is listed in Belize’s Holidays Act as Independence Day. The Government of Belize’s public and bank holiday notice for 2025 shows that when the date fell on a Sunday, the holiday was observed on the following Monday.[2][5]

Belize’s Labour Act says workers are not obliged to work on a public holiday. It also sets out pay rules for eligible workers when a public holiday falls on a scheduled workday, including rules for work performed on the holiday.[4]

Independence and national identity

Belize achieved full independence from the United Kingdom on September 21, 1981. Before independence, the country had been a British colony and was known as British Honduras until its name changed to Belize in 1973.[1]

The anniversary marks Belize’s emergence as an independent country. Its national flag was adopted on September 21, 1981; the National Institute of Culture and History describes the flag as a symbol of Belizean identity, unity and independence. The flag’s wreath of 50 leaves refers to 1950, when the modern independence movement began.[3]

September celebrations in Belize

Independence Day is part of Belize’s September celebrations. The Belize Tourism Board describes ceremonies and parades around the country on September 21, alongside cultural, religious and sporting events. The National Institute of Culture and History also describes September programming that includes public lectures, parades, street festivals, cultural performances and traditional music.[2][6]

The celebrations are not limited to Independence Day itself. The Belize Tourism Board identifies September 10 as St. George’s Caye Day, commemorating the Battle of St. George’s Caye, with official ceremonies, citizens’ parades and street bram held nationwide. It also describes the Carnival Road March through Belize City, with costumes and music reflecting the country’s cultures.[2]

Public events and flag displays offer residents and visitors ways to take part in the national observance. NICH notes that town and city councils often publish local September event schedules, and mentions flag raisings, cultural events and concerts as activities to look for.[6]

Independence Day is a public and bank holiday. Government offices close for the public holiday; check with banks, shops and transport providers about their arrangements before making plans.[2][5]
