Easter Monday in Belize

Meaning and legal status

Easter is a Christian observance of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Belize’s Holidays Act, Chapter 289, lists Easter Monday among the public holidays; the government’s annual holiday notice also includes it in the public and bank holiday schedule.[1][3]

The Labour Act, Chapter 297, sets out protections for workers on public holidays. It bars deductions from the wages of workers paid by the month or week for time not worked on a public holiday. Hourly, daily and certain task-paid workers may qualify for a normal day’s pay when the holiday falls on a scheduled workday and they meet the Act’s attendance conditions. Workers who work on Easter Monday on a scheduled workday are entitled to double their ordinary rate, subject to the Act’s scope and exceptions.[2]

Belizean Easter observances

The wider Easter period includes both religious activities and community events. Belize’s tourism board describes Good Friday observances in Benque Viejo del Carmen and San Pedro, as well as family outings and beach gatherings during the holiday period. Hot cross buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday, according to the board’s account of local customs.[3]

One event specifically associated with Easter Monday is the Castleton Derby horse race in Burrell Boom. The tourism board describes it as a local attraction that draws Belizeans and visitors, with food also available at the event.[3]

What to expect

The government classifies the day as both a public and bank holiday. That legal designation and the Labour Act’s holiday-pay provisions make it relevant to workers and anyone planning to use banking or public services.
