Armistice Day in Mayotte

A public holiday under French law

The French Labour Code names 11 November as a legal public holiday. A separate provision for Mayotte says the national and overseas holiday lists do not prevent collective agreements or local customs from providing additional holidays. Those rules make Armistice Day part of the island’s legal calendar, alongside holidays specific to Mayotte.[1][2]

The law gives the day its commemorative purpose as well as its date: 11 November is the anniversary of the 1918 armistice and a day to honor all who died for France. The national remembrance therefore reaches Mayotte through the same French law that applies across the Republic.[3]

What the day remembers

The holiday recalls the 1918 armistice and the end of fighting in the First World War. French law also extends the day’s tribute beyond that conflict to all people who died for France, including those remembered in other national commemorations.[3]

A Defence Ministry account by students in a Mayotte class-defence programme describes one local ceremony in Mamoudzou. It records a military parade, a student reading, wreaths laid at the war memorial and those present singing La Marseillaise.[5]

Work and opening hours

For private-sector employees, 11 November being a public holiday does not automatically mean a day off. Only 1 May must generally be a non-working day for all employees; other public holidays are non-working when a collective agreement or the employer provides for it.[4]

The law does not move the holiday to a weekday when it falls on an employee’s usual day off. Under the general private-sector rule, that employee is not entitled to an extra day of leave, although an agreement may offer better terms.[4]
