Meaning and origins

Corpus Christi, also called the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, honors the Catholic belief in Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. The feast grew from devotion to the Eucharist and was instituted for the universal Church by Pope Urban IV in 1264; the Vatican’s account also links its origins to the visions of Juliana of Cornillon and the Eucharistic miracle of Bolsena.[2]

A movable holy day

The date changes each year and falls on a Thursday. Canon law names the Body and Blood of Christ among holy days of obligation and says the faithful are to participate in Mass and refrain from work that hinders worship.[1][2]

That religious obligation does not by itself establish who receives a civil day off. Check with the relevant employer about leave or a substitute day.

Procession in the Vatican

Corpus Christi is observed in Vatican City with a Eucharistic procession. The Governorate describes a traditional procession in the Vatican Gardens, accompanied by the Band of the Vatican Gendarmerie and attended by clergy, religious, Swiss Guards and lay faithful. The specific programme and participants may vary.[3]

The procession reflects a wider Catholic practice: canon law describes public processions as a witness of veneration for the Eucharist, especially on this solemnity. Vatican City’s observance is therefore both a liturgical celebration and a public religious event within the State.[1][3]
