Meaning and place in the Easter calendar

Good Friday is part of the Easter period. Tonga Tourism describes Easter as an important Christian holiday and notes that Good Friday is included among the country’s Easter public holidays. The page also says Easter’s dates change from year to year.[2]

Public holiday under Tongan law

The Public Holidays Act, which commenced on 24 November 1919, lists Good Friday among Tonga’s public holidays, alongside Easter Monday. It does not set Good Friday to a fixed calendar date. The Act also defines the legal effect of a public holiday in relation to payments and actions that would not be required on a Sunday.[1]

The Act’s substitute-day provision does not apply to Good Friday: it specifically excludes Good Friday from the holidays shifted to another Monday when they fall on certain weekdays. Good Friday is observed on its own date.[1]

Business closures and exceptions

The Act permits Cabinet to order stores, shops and other places of business in specified towns, or throughout the Kingdom, to close on public holidays. A historical order cited in the Act states that business is to be suspended throughout Tonga on Good Friday and Christmas Day. The Act exempts hotels from the store-closing penalty, and allows sales of medicines, and certain food items until noon.[1]

These provisions concern businesses; they do not establish that every office, bank, school or transport service closes. Check opening hours directly with any service you plan to use.[1][3]

Observing Easter in Tonga

Tonga Tourism says Easter is less event-focused than Christmas, though some communities may have performances by schoolchildren featuring Tongan song and dance.[2] Its general visitor guidance describes Christianity as central to life in Tonga and says church attendance is high on Sundays.[3]
