Public holiday under Tongan law

Tonga’s Public Holidays Act names Christmas Day as a public holiday throughout the Kingdom. Christmas is excluded from the Act’s usual substitute-day rule for certain holidays that fall on particular weekdays, so Christmas Day remains on 25 December. The Act also lists the day immediately after Christmas as a public holiday; the government’s official calendar identifies that day as Boxing Day.[1][2]

The Act reproduces an order directing business to be suspended throughout Tonga on Christmas Day, with sales of bread, fresh milk, fresh fish and fresh meat excepted. It also sets out exemptions for certain sales, including medicines and some refreshments. These provisions indicate broad limits on ordinary business. Church services are a central feature of the holiday. Tonga Tourism reports that Christmas services are grander than usual. Visitors who hope to attend can ask a local church about its arrangements.[3]

Community singing competitions take place during the week between Christmas and New Year, according to Tonga Tourism. The season also coincides with a secondary peak in travel to Tonga, as many Tongans return from overseas for Christmas and New Year. The tourism authority presents this period as a time when families and communities come together.[3][5]
