Good Friday in Paraguay

A national holiday

Paraguay’s Law No. 7544 lists Thursday and Friday of Holy Week as national holidays. Good Friday is not among the holidays the law designates as movable, so it remains on its date in the Easter calendar rather than being shifted to a Monday.[1]

The Ministry of Labor says holidays established by law are days of obligatory rest for workers. Where a business needs staff to work because of the nature of its activity, the ministry says employees must be informed and hours worked on the holiday paid with a 100% premium over the ordinary hourly rate.[2]

Meaning and observance

Good Friday is part of the Christian commemoration of Jesus’ Passion and death. In Paraguay, official cultural and tourism sources describe Holy Week as a time of religious observance, including events that bring together faith and local cultural expression.[3][4]

Tañarandy’s Good Friday procession

One of the best-known local observances takes place in Tañarandy, in the district of San Ignacio, Misiones. The National Secretariat of Culture reports that the event began in 1992 and was created by artist Koki Ruiz. Its procession follows a candlelit route, with lanterns made from dried apepú citrus shells and living tableaux depicting scenes from the Passion and death of Christ.[3]

The National Secretariat of Tourism describes participants accompanying the Virgen Dolorosa in a Good Friday procession that ends at La Barraca, where visitors see living scenes of the Passion, death and Resurrection of Jesus. Tañarandy is a specific regional tradition.[3][4]

Planning around the holiday

The Central Bank of Paraguay lists Good Friday as a banking holiday for the country’s payment system. Check with banks, shops and transport providers about their hours before making plans.[5]
