Christmas Day in Paraguay

A fixed national holiday

Paraguay’s Law No. 7544 lists December 25, Día de la Navidad, among the national public holidays. The law says this date is not movable, so it remains on December 25 rather than shifting to a Monday when it falls on a weekend.[1]

The law authorizes the government to set additional national holidays by decree and distinguishes those holidays from administrative asuetos. It also provides that emergency medical work and public services considered essential to the community continue during holidays.[1]

The Paraguayan pesebre

The Nativity scene, or pesebre, is a central expression of Christmas in Paraguay. A cultural heritage survey describes families preparing it in the days before December 24, using a leafy shelter and materials such as flowers, seasonal fruit and grass. The scene holds figures of the Holy Family and other traditional Nativity characters.[2]

The survey records local decorations including strings of peanuts, chipa shaped like birds, eggshells and cut-out suns, moons and stars. It describes the leafy structure as a local adaptation of European Nativity scenes, with a possible connection to Guaraní associations between woodland and shelter. The survey presents this as an interpretation of the tradition, rather than a single documented origin story.[2]

The National Secretariat of Culture has encouraged communities and institutions to set up pesebres with elements characteristic of their locality. Its campaign framed the displays as a way to share local traditions and bring communities together during the Christmas season.[3]

Family and community customs

The heritage survey describes a tradition of visiting household pesebres on the afternoon of December 24. Visitors would pray before the scene, while hosts offered food and drink; chipa and fruit could be taken from the decorations. The survey notes that this visiting custom was already in decline when its account was prepared, so it should not be assumed that every family follows it today.[2]

The same account says pesebres were traditionally kept until January 6, the Feast of the Three Kings, when families and friends might gather as the scene was taken down and share its chipa and fruit. These details describe recorded customs, not a required schedule observed throughout Paraguay.[2]
