The battle behind the day
The Battle of Boquerón was fought around Fortín Boquerón from September 9 to 29, 1932, during the Chaco War between Paraguay and Bolivia. On September 29, Paraguayan forces captured the fort and took its remaining Bolivian garrison, ending a battle that Paraguay’s National Secretariat of Culture describes as its first decisive victory in the war.[3]
The victory became a national commemoration of the soldiers who fought and died at Boquerón. The Culture Secretariat’s account says more than 500 Paraguayan soldiers died there.[3]

Official commemorations have included tributes to Chaco War veterans. At a ceremony held for the battle’s 90th anniversary, Paraguay’s culture minister joined a tribute at Congress, where veterans received Peace of the Chaco medals and national officials addressed attendees.[4]
The Paraguayan Army has also documented an anniversary ceremony at the historic battle site, including the presentation of a laurel wreath at a national monument in honor of those who secured the victory.[5]
