Republic Day in Portugal
Portugal’s Republic Day, known locally as the Implantação da República, falls on October 5. It marks the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic in Lisbon in 1910 and is a mandatory public holiday under the Labour Code.[1][2]
A Portuguese public holiday
The Labour Code lists October 5 among Portugal’s mandatory public holidays. On such days, activities that are not permitted on Sundays must close or suspend work. The Code also says that some mandatory holidays may be observed on the following Monday when specific legislation provides for it; it does not set a general substitute day for October 5.[1]
The law does not mean every business must close: activities permitted to operate on Sundays are not covered by that closure rule. It does not specify opening hours for individual offices, banks, shops or transport services, so check directly with a provider if you need a particular service.[1]
The 1910 proclamation
The holiday commemorates the revolution that ended Portugal’s monarchy. Fighting began in Lisbon in the early hours of October 4, 1910, and continued into the next morning. On October 5, the Republic was proclaimed from the balcony of Lisbon’s municipal hall.[2]
The proclamation began the First Portuguese Republic. The new political order replaced the monarch with a republic based on elected representatives, and new national symbols were adopted. The First Republic lasted until the military coup of May 28, 1926, which dissolved Parliament and established military rule.[2][3]
How the day is marked
Official commemorations are one documented way the anniversary is observed. The Presidency’s historical archive records ceremonies in Lisbon, including an official anniversary ceremony at the municipal hall and a reception hosted by the President in 2004. Parliament’s library has also marked October 5 with a themed book exhibition.[4][3]
