Niger was proclaimed a republic on 18 December 1958, after becoming an autonomous territory with a territorial assembly and government council. At that point it remained within the French Community; Niger’s independence came later, on 3 August 1960.[1]

Niger’s government says a 1974 law made 18 December the national holiday in place of 3 August; in 2023, the government announced that 3 August would again be celebrated as the national holiday. How the day is marked
Official commemorations have included a ceremony with a military review, attended by regional and traditional authorities. A documented celebration in Tahoua also featured an athletics race, awards and recognition for regional defense and security personnel.[4]
The main celebration has sometimes moved among regional capitals. A Nigerien historian interviewed by the official news agency described the rotating event as a way for a region to host people from other parts of the country and said the associated development work had helped modernize regional capitals.
