Public holiday status and the law

The Public Holidays Act says the holidays in its schedule are to be kept throughout Nigeria. The schedule names Christmas Day but does not name Boxing Day. The Act also gives the Minister power to appoint a replacement day in a special case, and permits the President to appoint an additional public holiday by public notice.[1]

The Federal Ministry of Interior has announced December 26 as a public holiday for Boxing Day alongside Christmas and New Year holidays. A Nigerian High Commission calendar also lists Boxing Day on December 26. These official notices establish the day’s public-holiday status, though the Act’s standing schedule does not include it by name.[2][3]

For public holidays that fall on Saturday or Sunday, the Act says no additional day in lieu is to be kept. It also allows the heads of government departments to require staff to work on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday when public-service needs or public convenience demand it. As a result, a Monday replacement should not be assumed, and some public services may still require staff.[1]

Meaning and observance

The name Boxing Day is associated with the tradition of giving Christmas boxes on the day after Christmas. An Oxford reference entry describes the boxes as traditional gifts given on that day.[4]

The Ministry of Interior’s announcement places Boxing Day within Nigeria’s Christmas and year-end holiday period. It addresses Nigerians across religious and ethnic affiliations and encourages peaceful, moderate celebrations.[2]

Planning for the day

The holiday’s public status can affect work and services, but not every bank, school, shop or transport operator closes. Government departments may have exceptions under the Act. Residents and visitors should check directly with the office, bank, venue or transport provider they plan to use.[1][2]
