Easter Monday in Nigeria

A nationwide public holiday

The Public Holidays Act lists Easter Monday in its schedule and says scheduled holidays are to be kept throughout Nigeria. It also allows the minister responsible for internal affairs to substitute another day by public notice in a special case.[1]

The Act limits what people can be compelled to do on a public holiday: a person cannot be required to perform an act that they could not be compelled to perform on a Sunday. It does not state a universal paid-leave entitlement for every worker. Government department heads may still require staff to perform duties when public service or public convenience demands it.[1]

When it falls and substitute days

Easter Monday follows Easter Sunday, so its date changes from year to year. The Act provides that when a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, no additional day is kept in lieu. When a Sunday holiday is followed by a Monday holiday, only the Monday is kept; the Act also permits the minister to substitute another day in a special case by public notice.[1]

Christian meaning and official observance

For Christians, Easter recalls the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Nigeria’s State House describes the Easter season in these terms, while the Public Holidays Act gives Easter Monday its place in the national holiday schedule.[1][2]

An Interior Ministry Easter statement congratulated Christians and associated the celebration with the sacrifice and love of Jesus. It also urged Nigerians to pray for peace, unity and stability, and to show kindness and generosity to their neighbours.[2]

What to expect

The Act does not set opening hours for banks, schools, shops, private businesses or transport services. It does allow government departments to require some staff to work when public service or public convenience calls for it.
