Children's Day in Nigeria

Date and public holiday status

Children’s Day is observed each year on May 27. The Public Holidays Act lists Nigeria’s standing public holidays but does not name Children’s Day among them. It does allow the President to appoint a special public holiday for all or part of Nigeria, and state governors to do so within their states.[1][2]

A Lagos State school calendar lists the day as a public holiday in its academic schedule.[3] The Act says that when a listed public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, no additional day in lieu is observed.[1]

Meaning for children and families

The day is an occasion to consider the responsibilities of families, schools, communities, and government toward children. In a Children’s Day message, Nigeria’s Senate connected children’s development with the country’s future and cited legislation on children’s education and rights.[2]

The Federal Government has also used the occasion to call for children’s protection, education, inclusion, and opportunity. These themes frame the day as both a celebration and a reminder of continuing responsibilities toward children.[4]

How it is observed

Public programmes can bring children together for activities and give them a role in civic and educational discussions. A published federal programme has included a national rally and march past, an essay competition, a science exhibition, a football match, and sessions involving children and caregivers.[4] These are documented examples; the programme can vary by place and year.

A Lagos State academic calendar records Children’s Day in its school-year schedule, and a federal school publication documents students taking part in a march-past parade for the occasion.[3][5] Local arrangements may differ.
